This painting is a rework of Francisco de Goya’s ‘Third of May.’ While Goya’s painting depicts the horrors of war, ‘Hostility’ is an expression of Jesus’ words to His followers not to be astonished when they face persecution on account of Him (John 15:18-25). The figure of Christ in the center of the painting symbolizes the ‘threat’ of love Christianity poses to the world. The scene alludes to Christ’s fearlessness when on trial before Pilate.
